Work Permit(TRV)

Work Permit Programs:

Canada offers various types of work permits and temporary foreign worker programs to individuals who wish to work in the country on a temporary basis. There would be both Federal and Provincial Programs and each year there would be specific draws on a requirement basis. Some of the common types of Canada work permits and temporary foreign worker programs are:

1. Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP): The TFWP allows Canadian employers to hire foreign workers for a limited period when no Canadian citizen or permanent resident is available to fill the position. This program covers a wide range of occupations, from low-skilled to highly skilled positions, and is managed by Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC). Companies would need to apply with standard LMIA-based work permit applications.

2. International Mobility Program (IMP): The IMP includes work permits issued for various reasons, such as reciprocal agreements between Canada and other countries, academic exchanges, and international agreements, among others. This program does not require a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA).

3. Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP): The PGWP allows international students who have completed their studies at a designated Canadian educational institution to stay and work in Canada for up to three years, depending on the length of their program of study. To be eligible, the student must have completed a full-time program of study of at least eight months in duration. This would also classify as a Canadian Experience class subject to TEER requirements.

4. Intra-Company Transfers: This program allows multinational companies to transfer their employees to a Canadian branch or subsidiary. The employee must have worked for the company for at least one year and must have a job offer from a Canadian branch or subsidiary.

5. Global Talent Stream: The Global Talent Stream (GTS) is a fast-track program designed to help Canadian employers recruit highly skilled foreign workers in select technology and engineering occupations. The GTS allows employers to obtain a work permit for their foreign worker within two weeks of submitting their application.

6. Seasonal Agricultural Worker Program (SAWP): The SAWP allows employers to hire foreign agricultural workers for up to eight months of the year to address labor shortages in the Canadian agricultural sector. The program is managed by Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC).

These are some of the popular Canada work permit and temporary foreign worker programs that allow individuals to work in Canada on a temporary basis. The eligibility criteria and requirements for each program vary, so it is essential to research each program carefully before applying.

The Global Skills Strategy (GSS) and the Global Talent Stream (GTS) are both programs designed to help Canadian employers recruit highly skilled foreign workers. However, there are some differences between the two programs:

Eligibility criteria

The GSS is open to all employers who are seeking to hire highly skilled foreign workers in certain occupations, regardless of the industry. On the other hand, the GTS is limited to specific high-growth industries, such as technology and engineering, where there is a demonstrated need for skilled foreign workers.

Application process

Under the GSS, employers must apply for a Labor Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) and the work permit application process takes the same amount of time as a standard LMIA-based work permit. On the other hand, the GTS offers a faster and more streamlined application process, with a dedicated service channel that allows eligible employers to receive work permits for skilled foreign workers within two weeks of submitting their application.

Occupation-specific requirements

The GSS has no occupation-specific requirements, and all applicants must meet the general requirements of the program. However, the GTS has specific requirements for each of the designated high-growth occupations, which can vary depending on the industry.

In summary, while both the GSS and GTS are aimed at helping Canadian employers recruit highly skilled foreign workers, the GTS is more industry-specific and offers a faster and more streamlined application process, whereas the GSS is more general and is open to all employers seeking to hire highly skilled foreign workers in certain occupations.
